PILGRIM'S PRAYER

Although I may have traveled all the roads,
if I have not loved and forgiven from heart to heart,
if I have not discovered the freedom to be myself,
I have arrived nowhere.

Although I may have shared all of my possessions
with pilgrims of all languages and cultures,
if I have not shaken hands with pilgrims of unwashed paths,
if I have not dried the tears of forgotten tomorrows,
if I have not forgotten the anger of yesterday,
I have arrived nowhere.   

Although I may have carried the poor man's begging bowl
and sat at the table of every pilgrim in need of nourishment,
if I have given my best bread with an air of superiority,
or given my bad bread with a feeling of guilt,
if I have not been able to share brotherhood,
if I have not felt able to create sisterhood,
if I have not lived justice (peace and unity),
I have arrived nowhere.

Although I may have had food and water each day,
and enjoyed a roof and power every night,
or may have had my injuries well attended,
if I have not discovered in that the love of God,
I have arrived nowhere.

Although I may have seen all the monuments
and contemplated the best sunsets,
if I have not discovered the living greeting in every language
and the silent invitation from every face,
if I have not discovered in the author
of so much free beauty and so much peace,
I have arrived nowhere.   

If from today I do not continue walking on your path,
searching and living according to what I have learned,
if from today the best in me arrives in every person, friend or foe
in compassion on the Camino,
if from today I finally recognize God
in the eyes of all human beings
as the one God of my life,
I have arrived nowhere.

即便我一路由東往西，
翻山越嶺，經過無數村莊，
只要我尚未能全然自由地做自己，
那我等於哪都沒去。

即便我和不同語言文化的人們分享所有；
和千里跋涉的朝聖者們為友，
或和諸聖賢們分享庇護所，
只要我明天尚未能寬恕我的鄰人，
那我等於哪都沒去。

即便我從頭到尾全程揹著背包，
等待所有需要鼓勵的朝聖者，
或把床位讓給比我晚到的朝聖者，
不求回報地給出我的水瓶，
但當我回到家庭和工作中，
我卻無法友愛，無法創造喜悅、和平與合一，
那我等於哪都沒去。

即便我天天享有充足的食物飲水，
每晚享受庇護與熱水澡，
若受傷也得到良好照顧，
只要我未曾在這所有體驗中感受到神的愛，
那我等於哪都沒去。

即便我走訪所有的紀念碑，
凝視著絕美的日落而沉思；
或學會各種語言的問候語，
喝到乾淨的泉水；
只要我尚未意識到，
這人人皆可自由享受的美與平靜，
是由誰所創造的，
那我等於哪都沒去。

假使從今天起，
我不再行走祢的道途，
不再根據我已學習的一切生活與追尋，
假使從今天起，
我無法將每一個人、朋友、仇敵，
視為人生路途上的同盟友伴，
假使從今天起，
我無法視拿撒勒的耶穌，
為我生命中的唯一真神，
那我等於哪都沒去。
